What are the hazards of not replacing the air filter for a long time?

I. Five Major Dangers of Not Replacing the Air Filter for a Long Time

Increased Engine Wear and Carbon Deposits

  • When a filter fails, dust and sand enter the cylinder directly, mixing with the engine oil to form abrasives. This increases cylinder wear by eight times and piston ring wear by nine times. In severe cases, it can cause “cylinder scuffing” (scratching of the piston and cylinder wall).
  • Incomplete combustion of impurities can form thick layers of carbon deposits. In one case, a filter that had not been replaced for 60,000 kilometers resulted in valve carbon deposits “thick enough to scrape off a layer of mud,” resulting in repair costs exceeding 10,000 yuan.

Loss of Power and Increased Fuel Consumption

  • A clogged filter increases intake resistance, depriving the engine of oxygen and reducing combustion efficiency. This manifests as a “rumbling” and “sluggish” acceleration when climbing hills.
  • To maintain power, the ECU proactively increases fuel injection, resulting in a 10%-15% increase in fuel consumption. Tests have shown that replacing the filter can reduce fuel consumption by 0.8 liters per 100 kilometers, saving an average of a tank of fuel annually.

Decreased air conditioning system performance

  • The air filter and the air conditioning filter work together. A clogged filter reduces airflow, slowing cooling and heating, deteriorating in-vehicle air quality, and increasing the risk of mold growth (colony counts exceeding the standard by 300 times).

Driving safety hazards

  • Dust that enters the vehicle adheres to the windshield, forming a “smog film” that obscures vision when illuminated by oncoming headlights at night and increases the risk of accidents.
  • In extreme cases, severe clogs can cause the engine to stall while driving (e.g., due to a fuel filter failure).

Long-term cost increases

  • Increased fuel consumption and repair costs: Carbon deposit cleaning costs approximately 2,000-3,000 yuan, while cylinder scuffing repairs can cost up to five figures.

2. Detailed Guide to Replacing the Air Filter Yourself

🔧 Tools:
New air filter (check for vehicle type)

Phillips screwdriver

Clean rag (do not rinse the filter with water).

📌 Replacement Steps:
Locate the filter box
Open the engine compartment and find the black, square plastic box (usually on the right side) connected to the main intake manifold. The cover is labeled “Air Filter” or something similar.

Note: For new energy vehicles, disconnect the high-voltage power supply first.

Removing the Cover

Snap-on (common in Japanese vehicles): Gently push the snap upward to avoid breaking it with excessive force.

Screw-on (common in German vehicles): Remove 3-5 screws (save the screws).

Replacing the Filter

Remove the old filter and wipe the dust inside the box with a rag (do not wash with water).

Insert the new filter, ensuring the same orientation as the original (observe the arrow on the edge or the recessed notch).

Restoration and Inspection
After tightening the cover/repairing the screws, start the engine and confirm there are no unusual noises. Test drive the engine to feel the power restored.
